Summary: The work discusses the structural behavior of the connection between circular steel tubular columns and I-beams in civil construction, highlighting that this combination plays a fundamental role in absorbing loads and effectively transmitting these forces. However, the efficiency and safety of these structures depend on the rigidity of the connection. One strategy to improve the performance of these connections is the use of external diaphragms, flat components that are incorporated into the interface
between the column and the beam. These diaphragms increase the stiffness and load capacity of the connection. The study's premise is the welded connection between circular tubular pillars and I-beams, analyzing the influence of external diaphragms.
The objective is to analyze the tensions and deformations in the connection region when subjected to normal forces and bending moments. The use of external diaphragms is a reinforcement technique that increases the resistant capacity and rigidity of the structure, especially in situations of earthquakes or wind loads. At the end of the study, it was possible to obtain some significant conclusions, in which the use of numerical analysis is similar to the results obtained experimentally. An increase in the connection's resistance capacity was also observed with the use of the external diaphragm to the stresses compared to models without the stiffener. The study also evaluated the influence of geometric aspects in relation to resistance and it was found
that increasing the diameter and thickness of the pillar wall increases the resistant connection capacity.
