Summary: The foundation project is of paramount importance in a structural design. The land
carrying capacity and the ideal type of foundation for a building can be determined
from surveys. Indirect foundation design can be made in caisson or pile caps and the
choice also depends on the columns loads from structural design. This dissertation
presents the design for the optimization problem of pile caps with application
examples. The restrictions, will be those imposed by the parameters set by the ABNT
NBR 6118: 2014 and the CEB FIP (1970), the spacing between the piles and the
compression concrete strength (fck). A platform was developed in Matlab for the
formulation of the problem, and its optimization will be obtained by the Interior Point
Method. Comparative numerical examples show that when there is no geometry
constraint, an optimal solution can be obtained by reducing the amount of piles and
changing the geometry of the pile cap.
